The statement above, written by Dr. Benjamin Spock in a 1946 book that was held in high regard and then much disputed in later years, encourages parents to trust their instincts when it comes to parenting. Author Dawn Menken, in her book, Raising Kids, Raising Parents: Hands on Wisdom for the Next Generation, would agree. She writes: "While it is true there is a lot to learn about parenting, this statement encourages parents to trust their deepest feelings and inner wisdom, that which is beyond conscious knowing."

While this may be a difficult thing to do, it is so important in parenting. You know your child best; trust your instincts about her and your parenting.
